Some things I forgot to mention:

Siegfried Mischner is (was?) a veteran German sportswriter and thus his claim could be true. It would be logical for the United States to suppress information about Hitler that showed him to be anything but a racist monster. No matter that this was quite hypocritical of it given that the military wasn't desegregated until after the war and many white Americans wouldn't shake a black man's hand either. Still, if Hitler did shake Owens' hand it was pure, unadulterated propaganda. Berlin had been transformed in 1936 in order to lie to the world. Signs forbidding Jews from any number of public places had been removed. Propaganda films designed to boost tourism made Berlin into a haven of freedom and gaity. A week after the games ended things in Berlin went back to normal.

His real name was James Cleveland "Jesse" Owens.

John Woodruff was born in Connellsville and was a freshman at Pitt when he competed in the 1936 Olympics
